One less reason to be homesick !!
Sometimes, Praise truly is deserved. I was very upset when I moved to NYC, as it meant leaving my longtime hairstylist behind. This seems to be a city where there is a hair salon on every corner, so the decision as to which one to go to is difficult. I tried a few salons, none of which seemed like home. Then a co-worker of mine was talking about a salon she found using city search, and she was very pleased. On her recomendation, I made an appointment, and I am so glad that I did!! From the moment you walk up the street towards the salon, you get the feeling something special lies ahead. Upon entering, I felt immediatly at home and among friends. The Salon is cute and warm and friendly. It is quite small, but there are only two stations, so you feel very private and the attention very personal. The small staff was very friendly, both to me personally and to each other. I had my highlights and haircut by Mark, who told me he has been there for almost 11 years. He listened carefully to my history and asked me questions on how I wanted my hair to look that I hadn't even considered. He new exactly how to draw out of me my likes and dislikes, and although he did give me a few suggestions, he did not force his opinions on me. He was nice, humorous, and very hospitable. His work was excellent, and he was completely professional. I watched the staff and the other clients as my color was processing. It was clear that they were all very old friends, and I smiled as I watched them interact. At the end of it all, I was thrilled with my cut and color, and so very happy to have found Mark!! Next time, I think I will be a little more willing to go with his suggestions -- He knew what he was talking about - -lol. One embarrassing thing was that I did not know that they were cash or check only, and that they did not take credit cards. They were totally cool with me running out to the ATM machine, but next time I will know to bring cash with me or a check.

What you should know before going in...
I definitely think there's some shilling going on in these reviews. First thing to note is this is definitely NOT a Manhattan style salon and if you know that going in, it will make your expectations more realistic. I've only been to the salon for color. I know exactly what I want and need and even then, the results are mixed. They can do color, but that doesn't mean it's their strong suit. The place is neighborhoody and I could see comparing it to a Brooklyn version of "Steel Magnolias" (beauty parlor scenes obviously). It's true, Jessica tells the assistant what color to mix and then the asst mixes, applies and washes. She also doesn't prep your scalp so plan on walking out with a headband of color unless you're fastidious with color charm remover. By the end of your 30 mins or so in the chair, you'll notice how worn the place is. All of this being said, the ladies are very nice and welcoming. They will work with you to make you happy (even if their best effort still won't get you the results of that fancy mad ave salon) and you can't beat the price ($40 for single process). Color is one thing but I wouldn't trust them to cut my hair. Color you can fix quickly, but with a cut you have to wait for it to grow!

A great expierence
I dont know where some people are tranplanting from but I do keep up with places that I go and I BELIEVE in and looking and that I have found from reviews.I have been going to Jessica for a while through the positive review and the I have seen.I also go for color service and I know for a fact that she formulates and the asst. applies. If you are looking for a mannhattan type of salon which includes attitude and being cold this is not the salon for you. This salon is about being personal and kind and giving what the consumer wants at a reasonable price.

A Pleasant Experience...
I sometimes wonder if reviews are written by staff, friends and family. I'm not one of those. I chose this salon and stylist, Jessica, based upon what I read here and from one other website. All had glowing reviews. The location seemed appealing as well. Now for the hair. First, I was surprised Jessica didn't put the color on my hair. She supervised one of her staff to do it. I hadn't experienced that in any other salon I've been to before so that kind of threw me. I guess that's how they do it in NY. However, Jessica did put the highlights in my hair as I requested. They were left in a little too long which left my hair feeling quite dry. I can't say that I was overly thrilled with my cut either. I'm not going to blame it all on Jessica though. I think it must be challenging to do something different with fine hair. Positive Comments: I did notice Jessica cutting the hair of a male client and his cut looked excellent. The place itself is cute inside. I didn't have to wait. I thought the price was more reasonable than what I'm used to paying. Jessica is very talkative and nice. Negative Comments: They don't have up-to-date sinks. It was uncomfortable. The space for applying color and washing hair is very small. I felt like I was playing musical chairs with the other clients. It was awkward. I also felt sorry for the gal who applied the color and washed my hair. I really liked her, but another patron with a high level snootiness factor was giving her a rough time in front of me, which created a lot of stress for her. So there was a bit of that going on at this place. For the most part it was a pleasant experience, but I think I'll try another salon the next time.

Jessica... the best!
I've been in New York for 8 years now, and have only just found My Hairdresser. Not because I'm lazy, not because I'm not into my hair. It's all because I haven't found *the one* to make me feel lovely and wonderful and someone I trust with a pair of sheers. Jessica at Van Sickel Salon is by far the best I've met since moving here. She talks to you and listens to you, and works with you to find the best look. But, she can also just take one look at you and know exactly what will look and feel best. I'm actually a real stickler when it comes to watching someone does anything my hair. I watched her like a hawk, but in the end I even admitted to her of my watchful eye and told her that I couldn't find a thing wrong. Not one hair missed, nor one cut too short. She, also, took me from a weighed down 4 year stint of red from a box back to the blonde my mother has been begging me to be again. I hold Jessica and Van Sickel Salon in the highest regard and recommend her to everyone I know. On top of doing such a good job, she's professional, sweet, inviting and fun to spend time with as a captured audience under that cape for any amount of time. PS - She's available Monday-Thursday, and even will stay after normal business hours to accommodate those who can't get off the 9-5 job. She's worth the visit and the loyalty.
