Horrible Customer Service
On Sat morning I walked in to buy another Kreb fish for $5. The night before (from which they remembered me) I spent $30 on fish and food. The same week I spent $100ish on a Fish ...

Worst Store In NYC - Fish Snobbery At It's WORST
This place is a total rip off. Worst yet is the way the staff (including the owner who has been referred to in many previous reviews as "the black guy with the earing") acts like they are doing you a favor selling you a bunch of overpriced garbage. My first and only experience with this store went like this: I asked the black guy with the earring (who I later discovered was the owner) for advice on products for my new aquarium. He pushed a whole bunch of expensive supplies on me. I later discovered that I did not need ANY of them (and they would actually HARM my fish). I returned the next day and requested a refund. He was rude, aggressive and arrogant. He cursed at me and told me that he did not need my business. I have read many reviews like this since this altercation but I wish I had done more research beforehand.

won't go again
Called to get pricing and was told they would not give prices over the phone and I will have to come in. I live kind of far so it would be a hassle! rude manner I agree the staff isn't friendly. Their stock is okay not great if you want to goto a great store goto PACIFIC AQUARIUM, unfortunately they are even further away from me but worth it. Great selection of fish and the staff is really great, esp. the two younger guys that work there. Awesome planted tank display too! don't support NEW WORLD

Good fish supplies - horrible customer service.
I was a very frequent customer of this store for many years, it is pricey, but the fish are decently kept, compared to Petco. The attitudes and service from the two guys who worked at the cash register; one skinny black with earring and the other heavyset hispanic-looking, left a lot to be desired. They were usually arrogant, not very helpful, sometimes bordering rude and always gave the impression that they were doing a favor assisting you, any advise was fairly useless anyway because they are not very knowledgeable. I overlooked this because it was convenient on my way home to quickly stop in and get supplies for my salt water aquariums and I didn't have much dealings with them. The other workers who attended to the live stuff in the aquariums in the back were always quite helpful and friendly, and took extra effort in bagging the fish and other live purchaces. As you all know, saltwater is an expensive hobby, and I literally spent thousands of dollars over the years on equipment, supplies and fish. Recently I purchased a $70 piece of equipment recommended by the skinny black guy and was very unhappy with it. I returned it, my first return ever at this store, the following day for a store credit but he refused to take it back stating that it was opened and cannot be resold. I mentioned to him that I have been a loyal customer for many years - he knew me very well - and that if this is how they treat valued customers, then I will be doing business elsewhere. You can guess the rest ... it sucked - I am out $70 and stuck with a useless device which ironically did not!! I found another Aquarium store at 522 West 37St which comes highly recommended which I will be checking out soon ......

Very Poor Service Ethic
A large ego and small amount of real aqua-knowledge makes the sales staff at this place quite useless and somewhat dislikeable. I have purchased a lot of gear from this store (filters, food, driftwood, plants - hundreds of dollars worth) and yet the dude in there is always rude to me. Not a good look. Especially when you consider that there are several other quality aquarium stores in the city where one can find not only a better selection of stock and nicer prices, but also much kinder and more knowledgeable sales staff. Personally I would patronise somewhere that has respect for their customers, and takes some pride in offering customers the knowledge and courtesy they deserve.

Perpetually overhyped
Everyone thinks this place is the bees knees, but it really isn't that spectacular at all. Sure, they have a selection that encompasses more than the bread and butter staples, but that should be expected from any mom and pop aquarium store. I have to admit that they are very well stocked with equipment, and if you really need a particular item immediately, they will probably have it. That comes at a price though, and it's a bit too rich for me. If you are comfortable paying 16 bucks for a 4 dollar anubias or 45 bucks for a 12 dollar light bulb, then New World is definitely for you. On a side note, the staff really isn't as pleasant as other reviewers would make it seem. One of the guys up front is very friendly, but the other one isn't so much at all. The back appears to be staffed only with surly hipsters who help only begrudgingly.
